Tim, the hero | LEVEL 10

It is Monday morning. Tim and his friends are walking to school. As usual, they play, they tell each other jokes. They have fun and they laugh a lot.

On the way to school, there is a house with a big garden.  They walk past the house gate every day.

One day, while they were walking, Tim stopped suddenly. He had heard a terrifying growl behind him.

He turned pale. He was as white as paper. He turned around very slowly. To his biggest surprise, he saw a huge and terrifying dog. He and his friends started running without looking back.

On the next street corner Tim's friends stopped. Tim didn't. He kept on running until he arrived at school. His friends couldn't stop laughing. "Tim might have peed down his trousers." One of them said.

At school everybody heard about the story. Everybody started laughing too. Tim became a joke.  Poor Tim.

On the next day, Tim's dad followed him to school. He needed to go to the bank. The bank was next to the school.

On the way to school, Tim was taking the detour he was now used to. His father stopped him. He said he was in a hurry and there was no time to go trough another street. Tim's daddy didn't know the story.  He did't know why Tim didn't want to take that street. Suddenly, his father got the fright of his life.

While they were going past the house the dog turned up at the gate. The dog growled and shook the gate, making all of that noise sound like the world was falling apart. At the same time, the owner of the dog popped up. He came out of the blue.

"Sorry, I hope my dog didn't scare you." He then threw the dog a biscuit and the dog looked as sweet as a rabbit. "He is just a hungry dog, that's all! Give him a treat and you can even pat him on the head." Tim tried it and it was true. The dog was as sweet as a puppy with the treat. Tim's dad said goodbye and rushed to the bank.

Tim now had ideas in his mind.

RUDE QUESTIONS | C2 LEVEL TEXT EXAMPLE

Why is it rude and socially unacceptable to ask certain questions? The Independent  -  Christine Manby Picture the scene. You’re at a party. You know no one but the host and they’ve had to rush to the kitchen to rescue some smoking vol-au-vents from the oven. You spot a friendly looking fellow guest, also on their own, and sidle over to make their acquaintance by the buffet table. You swap names. You compare notes on your respective journeys to the venue. You talk about the weather. Hasn’t it been strange this year? So far so good. Now what? The host passes by with those vol-au-vents. You grab one and shove it in your mouth. And before you’ve entirely finished eating it you come out with the line , “So, what do you do?” If this were the 1970s, the needle would skitter across the vinyl on the record player, bringing the music to an abrupt and ugly end. As it is, the entire room falls silent as everyone turns to stare. It’s not that your mouth is still full of vol-au-v
