Pitaya and Claw-machines

By Carolina Brustz Rodrigues

In December last year, I went to the beach with my family. We usually go to the beach once a year. We always go to a different beach. This year we went to Camboriú. Camboriu is a beautiful beach in Santa Catarina. We stayed there from the last days of December to the first days of January. We celebrated new year’s eve there. It was awesome to see the fireworks by the beach.
We stayed in a rented apartment.  There was a shopping centre next to the apartment we were staying. Atlântico Shopping Center was its name. In this shopping centre there as an ice-cream parlour that sold pitaya ice-cream. Pitaya ice cream is delicious. It is delicious and the colour is amazing. I love its colour. It is bold pink and I love this colour.
There was something else in this mall which I liked very much. It was a claw-machine. Actually, there three claw-machines. In case you don’t know, a claw machine are those machines which you insert a coin and, after inserting the coin, we can try to catch a toy that is inside it. It is usually very difficult. Every day, my sister, my brother-in-law and I, tried to catch the teddy bears from the claw-machine. It was cool to try but, there was something we didn’t like very much. The place was always crowded. Lots of people stayed there looking at people trying to catch the toys.
I was very frustrated. It seemed to me that everybody was able to catch the teddy-bears. I was not.  But, eventually, we managed to catch five toys. I was extremely happy.
We stayed there for ten days. I remember being caught in the rain one day. We were riding a rented bike round the city and, suddenly, it started to rain. We didn’t care about the rain, actually, we loved it. Everything was so much fun.

RUDE QUESTIONS | C2 LEVEL TEXT EXAMPLE

Why is it rude and socially unacceptable to ask certain questions? The Independent  -  Christine Manby Picture the scene. You’re at a party. You know no one but the host and they’ve had to rush to the kitchen to rescue some smoking vol-au-vents from the oven. You spot a friendly looking fellow guest, also on their own, and sidle over to make their acquaintance by the buffet table. You swap names. You compare notes on your respective journeys to the venue. You talk about the weather. Hasn’t it been strange this year? So far so good. Now what? The host passes by with those vol-au-vents. You grab one and shove it in your mouth. And before you’ve entirely finished eating it you come out with the line , “So, what do you do?” If this were the 1970s, the needle would skitter across the vinyl on the record player, bringing the music to an abrupt and ugly end. As it is, the entire room falls silent as everyone turns to stare. It’s not that your mouth is still full of vol-au-v
