COME ACROSS

I came across my old college roommate in town today. I met my old college roommate by chance in town today. Why don't you come across to our house this evening? You must have come across some real characters, working in the circus. You must have met some real characters, working in the circus. Perhaps I shall come across him in France. The robber told the woman to come across with her purse. Let us know if you come across anywhere that has something special to offer. I never remember having come across a man like that. I've never come across anyone quite like her before. I came across a group of children playing. We like to identify and celebrate women's success whenever we come across it.

Matthew Effect | LEVEL 08

Have you ever heard of the Matthew Effect? What is the Mathew Effect? It is very simple.  Basically, the effect is, if you have, you will have more. If you do not have, you will have less. Sounds obvious, doesn't it.  In the book of Matthew there is a passage that says: "For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but for those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away. You already know that, don't you? If you have money, you invest. If you invest you make more money. If you don't have money and need to buy something expensive, you may finance.  If you finance you pay interest rate. If you pay interest rate you lose money. Rich people pay in cash a can bargain. Poor people pay more for less.  It also happens in education. If one kid learns how to read, he will read. If he reads, he will learn more. If he learns more, he will be smarter. If he is smarter, he will have better grades...

Matthew Effect | LEVEL 05

The Bible is a very old book. In fact, it is not a single book. It is a collection of many different books.  This collection are divided into two parts. The New Testament and The Old Testament.  The book of Matthew is in the new Testament. It is the first one in The New Testament.  There is an interesting message that is used to teach a lesson. It teaches three specific lessons. A gospel lesson, an educational lesson and an economic lesson.  I will write about the Matthew Effect lesson. LEVEL 06

Luck

Once there was a Brazilian man who really wanted to be rich. He had this fantasy of becoming rich since he was a naive kid and, so did his father. I guess he and his father was nothing different from the majority of people. He had already tried many different things in an attempt to become rich but, nothing worked.  At the age of forty he had already given up trying. He had no more hopes. Many people believe that someday luck will knock on their doors and they will make it big winning the lottery.  This man was too skeptical to have such hopes. His father at the age of 75 was still trying. Brazil is not the land of opportunities.  He was a teacher. Once he was in a classroom and one of his students was able to guess a random question spot on. He then joked saying that this student could win the lottery. As a joke, he asked the boy to write down fifteen numbers. These would be the numbers for a lottery ticket. The boy did it and he slipped the paper int...

CUNNING | SENTENCE MINING

He is cunning. He is astute. He is crafty. He is sly. He's cunning and manipulative. It is said that the fox is more cunning than any other animal. Even though Shannon thought she had a cunning strategy to get Bill to propose, it turned out to be wasted planning when he told her that he was already married.

Brazil | LEVEL 08

Brazil is south America's biggest country. It has lots of wonderful places to visit. Many people from all over the world come to Brazil. They visit many places. The most visited places are the beaches.  Brazil is a good place to live, but there are serious problems in the country. The most serious problem is inequality. Brazil has lots of rich but the majority of the population is very poor. Another big problem is corruption. The criminality in Brazil is also very high. The north of Brazil is hot. The south of Brazil is a little colder than the north.  Brazil shares borders with 10 smaller countries. Brazil shares borders with Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.  About two hundred thousand people live in Brazil. São Paulo, the biggest city, is the financial capital of the country. Brasilia is the federal capital. Brazil is very known outside for Rio de Janeiro's bigges...

Um de seis irmãos, ele se formou no colegial, foi para a universidade e tornou-se professor nos anos 1960 - um cargo que ocupou por 17 anos. ‘I was a teacher for 17 years, but I couldn’t read or write’ | SENTENCE MINING 08

I was  deceitful .  I was teaching my students to be seekers of truth and I was the biggest liar in the room.  I was at this desperate spot in my life.  I wanted to tell somebody and I wanted to get help and one day in the grocery store I was  standing in line  and there were two women in front of me talking about their adult brother who was going to the library.  He was learning to read and they were just  full of joy  and I couldn't believe it. So one Friday afternoon in my  pinstriped  suit I  walked into  the library and asked to see the director of the literacy programme and I sat down with her and I told her I couldn't read. I had a volunteer  tutor  - she was 65 years old. She wasn't a teacher, she was just somebody who loved to read and didn't think anybody should go through life without knowing how to. She got me to about sixth-grade-level reading  -  I thought I'd died and gone to he...

‘I was a teacher for 17 years, but I couldn’t read or write’ | SENTENCE MINING 07

I lived in fear that he would call on me, every week I was terrified, but I had a  backup plan. If he had called on me I was going to get out of my chair and take two steps,  grab  my chest,  drop to the floor  and hope they called 911.  Whatever it took not to get caught, and I never got caught. I didn't belong in the classroom, I was  trespassing . I wasn't supposed to be there and sometimes what I was doing made me  physically sick , but I was  trapped , I couldn't tell anybody. I got married while I was a teacher. Getting married is a sacrament, it's a commitment to be  truthful  with another person and this was the first time I thought, "OK, I'm going to trust this person, I'm going to tell her." So we got married and we had a child and years later it really  came home to her. I was reading to our three-year-old daughter. We read to her  routinely , but I wasn't really reading,  I was making the stories ...

‘I was a teacher for 17 years, but I couldn’t read or write’ | SENTENCE MINING 06

Maybe by  osmosis , maybe by prayer, maybe by a miracle I would one day learn to read. So I graduated from college, and when I graduated there was a teacher  shortage  and  I was offered a job .  It was the most illogical thing you can imagine -  I got out of the lion's cage and then I got back in to  taunt  the lion again.  Why did I go into teaching?   Looking back it was crazy that I would do that. But I'd been through high school and college without getting caught - so being a teacher seemed a good place to hide.   I remember how  fearful  I was. I couldn't even  take  the  roll  - I had to ask the students to pronounce their names so I could hear their names.  And I always had two or three students who I identified early -  the ones who could read and write best  in the classroom - to help me.  One of my biggest fears was  faculty  meetings.  We had th...
